Cygański wirtuoz Django (Jean Baptiste) Reinhardt jest jednym z niewielu europejskich innowatorów i twórców jazzu, którzy swoją muzyką wywarli tak przemożny wpływ na rozwój tej muzyki.
Początkowo grał na skrzypcach, by niebawem wybrać gitarę. Już od najmłodszych lat brał udział w estradowych prezentacjach cygańskich taborów. W 1928 r. w czasie pożaru wozu odniósł poważne poparzenia i utracił dwa palce. Aby przezwyciężyć to kalectwo i dalej grać na gitarze, wypracował unikatową technikę gry, co początkowo odbierano jako sztuczkę młodego gitarzysty. Później postrzegano kalectwo jako przezwyciężenie technicznych trudności i eksplozje talentu gitarzysty.
Przełomowe okazało się spotkanie (w 1934 r.) ze skrzypkiem Stéphanem Grapellim. Perfekcyjne poczucie swingu, mistrzowska wirtuozeria obu artystów spowodowały, że założyli autorski zespół, któremu nadali nazwę Quintette Du Hot Club De France. Niebawem zespół stał się wielką sensacją Paryża, a gitarzysta i skrzypek stali się idolami sympatyków jazzu. Odtąd brzmienie, stylistyka, repertuar kwintetu był niedoścignionym standardem obowiązującym zespoły, które tworzyły muzykę w podobnym stylu.
Reinhardta angażowano także często do akompaniowania koncertującym we Francji amerykańskim artystom jazzu (od Eddiego Southa i Benny'ego Cartera po Colemana Hawkinsa). Międzynarodową sławę przyniosły mu nagrania z Quintette Du Hot Club De France. Styl jego gry wywołał sensację. Melodyka improwizacji Reinhardta odznacza się swoistym charakterem i płynnością, pełna jest nowatorskich pomysłów, zanurzona w stylu tchnącym romantyczną emocjonalnością, ale i rytmicznym nerwem. Kwintet rozwiązał się wraz z wybuchem wojny w 1939 r., Reinhardt zaś powrócił do koczowniczego życia, występując w różnych częściach Europy. Pod koniec wojny (w okresie tym zastąpił gitarę akustyczną gitarą elektryczną), otrzymał zaproszenie od Duke'a Ellingtona na koncerty w USA i wkrótce pojawił się w Nowym Jorku.
Reinhardt, po powrocie do Europy, prowadził ponownie swój własny mały zespół okazjonalnie powracał też do Grappelliego i do reaktywowanego kwintetu. W latach 40. i wczesnych 50. sporo koncertował i nagrywał, pracując równocześnie w nowej roli - kompozytora. Reinhardt pozostaje dzisiaj jedną z najważniejszych postaci jazzu.
